Walking
Walking
Between March 1 and May 8, 2015, you (and your class) will be counting your steps and entering them into our spreadsheet of information. (You are welcome to enter your steps, weekly, or every other week.)
The Walk Our World Project invites classrooms around the world to “count their steps” and then add them to a grand total as we try to circle the globe.
The circumference of earth is 24,901.55 miles.
Which is equivalent to 131,480,184 feet.
If the average student walks 1 step every 1 ½ foot -- that equals out to 87,653,456 steps -- which seems HUGE -- but if we break it down, and work as a team…..our hope, our goal -- is to walk the world together! If we divide this by 300 classrooms -- it is 292,178 steps. If you have 30 in your classroom -- it goes down to 9,740 steps per student. (for some of your kids, that is a daily tally - smiles!) SO, we might end up circling the globe a few times.
To make this a bit more fun than just walking at recess, we will set up locations which you and your students will “walk” to from your campus. Places of interest, well known locations, and more. We will list some FARAWAY locations plus encourage you to also “walk” to your city hall, local library, etc.
Using Google Earth -- or the map software of your choice, you will put in YOUR ADDRESS and then the ADDRESS of the destination and find out the miles, divide that into feet, divide by 1 ½ feet, and begin to walk.
Your class can walk as a team -- and you also can encourage your students to involve their families, and friends. We will provide you with a worksheet to keep track of all the steps.
We also encourage you to connect with other classrooms participating and talk about your walking -- or also walk together. We will “walk” out a couple of the GO NOODLE videos so we know the step count and then you can “walk” in your classroom!
We will have a Google Presentation Page where you can share pictures as well as share information about your local “walks”.
Some of you are lucky enough to have pedometers -- and if you do, feel free to use those to help you keep track. And for our participants who are unable to walk - you can participate too -- just keep track of the space you cover each day and divide that by 1 ½ feet. Remember EVERY little bit helps make a BIG total!
